December 2008

From The East of Old

It is hard to believe this year is just about over but it is. We started out with an unexpected rise to a position in the East and with it the honor of being the first Master in the new Doric Lodge.

This being my third run as Master I was here when we decided to sell our old building and then again, in the East when we moved out and now when we moved in again. Now we have a line of officers in place and we should be in good shape for the future.

We had a Lodge dedication in June where we had most of the Grand Lodge officers present. We have had several petitions this year and are doing a lot of degree work. We still have more degree work to go and would like to see are members support these efforts.

Our building is almost complete with only landscaping left to do. There will be an opportunity for everyone to leave your mark with the purchase of a bush or tree. There will be more on this in the coming months.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve Doric from the East and now from the side lines where I hope to see you all.

Travelling West to East

Brethren, it is truly an honor to be your Worshipful Master-elect, thank you.

Our public installation will be on Sunday, December 7th, 2008. A dinner will be served at 5:30 pm with installation to follow at 7:00 pm. All are welcome to attend both.

I wish to thank all of you who have offered your guidance and counsel and wish to convey that I profoundly hope you will continue to offer it. I wish to especially thank Dale Holmen and Mitch Custer; as they have spent tremendous amounts of time getting me ready for this responsibility.

During our second meeting on December 16, 2008; we will spend a little time on the fundamentals. Due guards & signs, rod techniques, grips & words, and anything else the brethren would like to review. If you’re new, a little rusty on those things, or want to help make sure our newer brethren get it right; please make the time to join us for the meeting on December 16th.

The theme of my year in the East will be enlightenment. Your time is valuable and out of our 140-ish members, we see pretty much the same 15-20 guys for most meetings. We will continue to conduct “routine” business, but we will strive to do so quickly and to add at least a little Masonic education to every meeting. Some of you are active in Shrine or other bodies, but don’t regularly attend lodge. Some of you live out of town, travel frequently on business, are snowbirds, can’t stay up late, or have other commitments. Perhaps you have other reasons for not attending lodge.

In your EA degree, you were given a charge with the words, “Your regular appearance at our meetings is earnestly solicited.” Make no mistake about it, brethren. It is.

Maybe you don’t come because you can’t, you never have, nobody has recently asked you to, you don’t know anyone, or you don’t want to be embarrassed. The first of those reasons is understandable, but let’s fix anything else:

Please come to lodge. Doric is your lodge. There are no strangers here; we are your brothers and friends. If you feel embarrassed or not welcome for any reason, the fault is not yours; it is ours. Please accept our apologies and give us a chance to welcome you home. If you have a transportation problem, please let us know so we can try to solve it.

If you still have a reason for not attending lodge regularly, or wish to talk to me about concerns or programming desires; please call or email me and let me know why. My phone number is (608) 274-4430 and my email address is master @ doric356.com.

Hope to see you in lodge!
